Include a Graphic in a Question Item

Before preparing a graphic, you should consider whether the situation can be handled with HTML formatting (useful for incorporating tables, text styles, basic mathematical symbols, and more).

Graphics must be in GIF, JPEG, or PNG format and are limited to a maximum of 200 kilobytes (200KB) in size.

The first step is to create or obtain the graphic and make it available on your computer system for uploading. For example, you may want to move the graphic files you want to upload into a convenient folder or directory on your hard drive. Then use the following procedure to upload each graphic.

  1. Bring up the question item by navigating to it in the Question Item Library and clicking the magnifier icon next to it.
  2. Click Manage Graphics/Media.
  3. In the Layout drop-down menu in the Manage Graphics/Media for Question Item pop-up, select the component of the question (Question Item Graphic, Question Item Media, or Response) for which you want to upload a graphic or media file.
  4. In the File field, click the Select button and choose the graphic or media file that you want to upload.
    • You can upload a graphic (up to 200 KB) or media file (up to 4 MB) for the main Question Item and/or a graphic (up to 200 KB) for any of the Responses.
  5. Click Upload.
  6. After the graphic appears, you can use one of the graphic tools to modify the image (rotate, crop, etc), choose a different graphic by clicking Replace Image and repeating steps 4-5, or remove the graphic by clicking Delete File. When you are done making changes, click Close.

By default, the graphic is displayed above the question text. You can also display the question to the left or right of the text, or below it.

  1. To change the positioning of a graphic in a question item, click Edit.
  2. In the Edit Question Layout screen, click the Graphic position field drop-down and select the position of the graphic (Above Text, Left of Text, Right of Text, Below Text).
  3. Click Accept.
